The Art of Wood Carving with Matthias Malet

"My father worked wood. Watching him as a child made me want to do it too,” explains Matthias. After graduating from the ESEA Cabinetmaking College in Avignon, he made his debut alongside reputable wood turners of the region. Through their collaborations, these wood-working professionals animated by the same passion enabled him to discover different approaches to the trade.

Since then, the apprentice has taken flight. At the heart of his workshop nestled in a small village in the Vaucluse, he favors working with "species native to the local shrub like juniper burl, the turpentine tree, strawberry tree or the hackberry," and provided by a forest ranger native to Provence; varieties considered "second-rate," that the sculptor appreciates for their fragrance and fine grain.

Whether woodturning or carving, Matthias does not follow established rules. "Working time can range from a few minutes, a few hours to several weeks or even months," he says. Inspired sometimes by the books he reads or the work of other artisans, most often he is led by his own intuition, "Something comes to me and I just try to do it."
